Olive production and its pressing for oil were abundant in Żejtun during Roman times. The press is a replica of one used at that time mainly to separate the pulp from the stone. It is mechanically interesting because the two wheels inside the basin rolled in their axle whilst being turned by a pair of sturdy labourers.
